Faculty in the news

John L. Jackson, Jr., Ph.D., the Richard Perry University Professor of Communication and Anthropology, wrote the column, “The Pedagogical is Political (and Personal),” for the current issue of the University of Pennsylvania Almanac. “When asking people to thematize ideas and actions that are often instinctual and unquestioned, or to explain the potential irrationalities and contradictions of their own beliefs, ethnographers open up the opportunity for people to think more rigorously and purposefully about how they have come to hold the beliefs they espouse, beliefs that they are sometimes willing to die for,” he writes.

Marwan M. Kraidy, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication, discussed the pervasiveness of all forms of media among Middle East audiences at a panel discussion in Qatar this week.

Sharrona Pearl, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Communication, will be among the panelists at the Philadelphia Science Festival panel “Seemed Right at the Time?! Scenes from Science Past,” April 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the Wagner Free Institute of Science, 1700 West Montgomery Ave., Philadelphia.
