Book talk by Prof. Zelizer

Barbie Zelizer, Ph.D., the Raymond Williams Professor of Communication and Director of the Scholars Program in Culture and Communication, will discuss her new book, About to Die: How News Images Move the Public, tomorrow, January 25, at 6 p.m. at the Penn Bookstore.

Prof. Jamieson gives talk at East-West Center

“Rhetoric matters … indeed the rhetoric of the candidate credentialed him to be President of the United States,” said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Ph.D., the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication and Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, during a speech at the East-West Center in Honolulu, HI on Jan. 20.  Prof. Jamieson also appeared on Hawaii Public Radio discussing the same subject. 

Prof. Jamieson also spoke at a National Communication Association professional development webinar on January 18.

Prof. Jamieson’s book Presidents Creating the Presidency: Deeds Done in Words (University of Chicago, 2008) is referenced in a news story about the 2011 State of the Union Address in a story from Agence France Presse.

Annenberg faculty offers insights into Tucson tragedy

Members of the Annenberg faculty were called upon by the news media to offer perspectives and insights in the wake of the shooting of 20 persons, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, AZ.  Prof. Barbie Zelizer talked about the lessons of the incident during the public affairs program “@ Issue” on NBC 10 in Philadelphia.  Comprehensive news stories included interviews with Profs. Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Diana Mutz, Al Felzenberg, and Brooks Jackson, director of FactCheck.org.

Research backs up anti-smoking, obesity campaigns

Research by the Annenberg School for Communication’s Center of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research and the Annenberg Public Policy Center is at the core of a public health advertising campaign underway in the Philadelphia media market. Details here.

John L. Jackson, Jr., Ph.D., the Richard Perry University Professor of Communication and Anthropology, was a guest on the NPR program “Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane” Jan. 14 talking about race in America.

Monroe Price’s soviet-era poster collection on display at Annenberg USC

“Laughing Matters: Society Propaganda in Khruschev’s Thaw,” a series of historical political posters belonging to Annenberg’s Monroe Price, director of the Center for Global Communication Studies, has moved to the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

Prof. Price also was interviewed by the journal Modern Communication about the development of global communication.

Ellen Hume, Annenberg Fellow in Civic Media at Central European University, has released a new report on journalism freedom in Central and Eastern Europe.

Prof. Herb Simons lecture

Herb Simons lectured at Haifa and Tel Aviv universities on January 11 and 12 on the rhetoric of social movements. Herb is teaching communication and persuasion at Annenberg this semester.

Willard “Wick” Rowland (ASC ’71) named a 2010 television person of the year.

Doctoral student Rowan Howard-Williams published in International Communication Gazette.

Doctoral student Aymar Jean Christian published in In Media Res.

Michael Serazio, Ph.D., (Gr ’10), has been interviewed several times and written about the Jan. 8 shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and shooting of nearly 20 persons in Tucson, AZ.  He was a guest on Connecticut Public Television on Jan. 11, and made a guest appearance on MSNBC to talk about the incident.  He also wrote an opinion piece for TheAtlantic.com.
