Annenberg faculty provide perspective on the death of Osama bin Laden The news media again turned to Annenberg for input in the wake of the news of the death of Osama bin Laden. Barbie Zelizer, Ph.D., the Raymond Williams Professor of Communication and Director of the Scholars Program in Culture and Communication, was interviewed by numerous news organizations as to whether or not the United States should release photos of Bin Laden’s corpse. Marwan Kraidy, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication, talked to the Pennsylvania Gazette about news coverage of the event in Middle East news media. And Carolyn Marvin, Ph.D., the Frances Yates Professor of Communication, talked to Stars and Stripes what changes the U.S. has undergone these past 10 years. New book edited by CGCS’ Monroe Price, Susan Abbott, and Libby Morgan Measures of Press Freedom and Media Contributions to Development: Evaluating the Evaluators, edited by Monroe E. Price; Director of the Annenberg Center for Global Communication Studies; Susan Abbott from Internews Network; and Annenberg’s Libby Morgan, Associate Director of CGCS, has just been released by Peter Lang publishers. The book came from a workshop held at Annenberg four years ago, which also produced a related report on measuring press freedom. Prof. Joseph Turow interviewed by Reuters about the location tracking capability in Apple iPhones. Leonore Annenberg Scholarship recipients announced – two students from Tennessee are among the five nationwide recipients. Recognition for work by Prof. Hampton, doctoral students Oren Livio and Lauren Sessions Goulet. Students in Paul Messaris’s Visual Communication Laboratory have inaugurated a website featuring the lab’s recent multi-media projects, and have begun the process of presenting the site’s content in multiple languages, including Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish. Undergraduate Jaclyn Gurwin’s documentary, I Am Not My Body, was screened recently at Annenberg. Her work was also recently screened at the conference “Reading the Body in Contemporary Culture: A Multi-disciplinary Graduate Student Conference” at the University of Maryland. Alumna Natalie Jomini Stroud publishes new book, Niche News: The politics of News Choice. It’s commencement season.
