New book from Dean Delli Carpini After Broadcast News is the new book by Bruce Williams, Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, and Michael X. Delli Carpini, Ph.D., Professor of Communication and Walter H. Annenberg Dean. Prof. Williams will speak at Annenberg on Oct. 28. Prof. Krippendorff lectures at Annenberg West Klaus Krippendorff, Ph.D., the Gregory Bateson Professor for Cybernetics, Language, and Culture visited USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism for a lecture on Monday October 10, titled “From Conversation to Discourse.” Details here. Prof. Turow talks about ad tracking at the FTC Annenberg’s Joseph Turow, Ph.D., the Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Communication, spoke to an audience with the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. recently. Prof. Turow, author of the forthcoming The Daily You: How the New Advertising Industry is Defining Your Identity and Your Worth (Yale University Press, November 2011), discussed the challenges of self-regulation in an environment where technology gives advertisers the ability to learn a great deal about individuals. Moehler, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Communication, delivered a talk at Cornell University Oct. 13 during an Institute for African Development conference. Details here. Stories abounded in the press about the Republican Party presidential debates, and the national news media, including Reuters and USA Today, turned to Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Ph.D., the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication and Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, for perspective. John L. Jackson, Jr., Ph.D., the Richard Perry University Professor of Communication and Anthropology, discussed the question “Is Herman Cain a Racist?” in his blog for The Chronicle of Higher Education. Monroe Price, Adjunct Full Professor and Director of the Center for Global Communication Studies, writes about the accomplishments of Claudia Gould, outgoing director of the Institute for Contemporary Art, in an opinion piece in the Daily Pennsylvanian. Adjunct Joan Garry talks about the Occupy Philadelphia protests in a recent edition of The Daily Pennsylvanian. Congratulations to Sungkyoung Lee, Ph.D., Research Director in the Annenberg Center of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research (CECCR), and doctoral student Rui Shi. The two won second and third place, respectively, in a poster competition during a meeting of CECCR grantees in St. Louis. Dr. Lee’s poster was titled “The effects of smoking cues and argument strength of anti-smoking PSAs on ex-smokers’ efficacy, attitude, and intention to abstain from smoking,” and Rui Shi’s poster was titled “Effects of Online Comments on Smokers’ Perception of Anti-Smoking Public Service Announcements.” Le Han published in Critical Studies in Media Communication. David Conrad’s work honored at Global Fusion conference.
