FlackCheck, ASC in the midst of campaign news

FlackCheck.org continues to generate attention. The Washington Post ran two stories on FlackCheck.org in the past week.  One including a video interview with Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Ph.D., the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication and Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center and another as part of a story about Stephen Colbert’s candidacy for president. The Daily Pennsylvanian also cited FlackCheck and FactCheck.org in a January 12 story.  Prof. Jamieson also was interviewed by The Washington Post for a story about “branding” Mitt Romney, and by USA Today for a story about GOP candidate message framing in the campaign.

Also, Prof. Jamieson will present on “New Media, Campaigns, and Elections” during a February 9 talk at the Center for Information Technology & Society at the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Prof. Turow talks online privacy

Joseph Turow, Ph.D., the Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Communication, talked about online privacy and marketer’s ability to track us based on our web browsing in a story that appeared in Adweek. He also discuss that topic and his new book, The Daily You: How the New Advertising Industry Is Defining Your Identity and Your Worth, in an interview on the National Public Radio program “Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane.”

CGCS and the first Afghanistan Media Committee

Afghan_press_conference

Press attendance was very heavy at the first press conference by the Afghanistan Media Committee, which comprises Afghani lawyers working underneath the Afghanistan Independent Bar Association. The committee is related to efforts from the Center for Global Communication Studies’ Afghanistan Media Development and Empowerment Project.

The committee will serve as a forum for lawyers in Afghanistan with an interest in media law and policy to share best practices; defend the legal protection of journalists and the press; improve media defense litigation skills; promote the professional standards of media law advocates; and draft policy reports and advocate for the fundamental human rights of freedom of expression and information.

Abdul Hamid Mobarez, President of the Afghanistan National Journalist Union (ANJU) and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Information and Culture Dean Mohammad Mobarez Rashidi, spoke passionately about the critical importance of this organization. Live media coverage of the conference can be viewed on Tolo News. (12:00 mark. Note: the video is not in English.)
