Prof. Jamieson on FlackCheck and the 2012 campaign

Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Ph.D., the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication, on June 11 spoke to an audience at the Personal Democracy Forum, explaining the mission and activities of FlackCheck.org. (More on the Personal Democracy Forum event here.)  She also continues to contribute to the discussions surrounding the 2012 presidential campaign via:

A June 6 editorial in The Sacramento Bee, citing Prof. Jamieson’s work with FactCheck.org, and telling readers to brace for an onslaught of negative political advertising.

A June 6 guest column in the AARP Bulletin, urging citizens to be SuperPAC watchdogs.

A June 7 story in the Albuquerque Journal about fact checking political advertisements, especially those from political action committees.

A June 8 story on NJ.com about women moderating presidential candidates debates.

A June 12 guest appearance on the WNYC program “The Takeaway,” where she talked about the use of social media and the ability to customize political advertising.

A June 12 story on Talkingpointsmemo.com about violent images and languages creeping back into political campaign rhetoric.

A June 14 story on CNN.com about the spin politicians put into their rhetoric.

A June 16 Associated Press story about the use of language by candidates.

A June 18 Associated Press story about the presidential candidates misquoting each other.

Additionally, Prof. Jamieson was the keynote speaker at the conference for the League of Women Voters recently.  The topic of her talk was “FlackChecking Political Sleaze.”

Barbie Zelizer, Ph.D., the Raymond Williams Professor of Communication, has won the Marshall McLuhan best book award from the Media Ecology Association for her book About to Die: How News Images Move the Public

Joseph Turow, Ph.D., the Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Communication, was a speaker recently at the Privacy Law Scholars Conference in Washington, D.C.  

Marwan M. Kraidy, Ph.D., Professor of Communication, is currently the Edward Said Chair of American Studies at the University of Beirut. Prof. Kraidy recently gave several public lectures and talks, including the Edward Said Lecture at the American University of Beirut in February, a talk about the rising role of Turkish media and popular culture in the Middle East at Izmir University of Economics in Izmir, Turkey, and a talk about cultural production during revolutionary times at the Jordan Media Institute in Amman, Jordan, both in May. 

Prof. Kraidy also recently published an article in Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication, 2012, titled “The Revolutionary Body Politic: Preliminary Thoughts On A Neglected Medium In The Arab Uprisings, pp. 68-76.

A focus group run by Annenberg adjunct Peter Hart reports that President Obama is “in trouble” with respect to being re-elected.

Chelsea Jerome, a high school student from Woodbury, VT, is one of the recipients of the 2012 Leonore Annenberg Scholarship.

Doctoral candidate Hyun-Suk Kim, Magdalena Wojcieszak, Ph.D. (Gr ’09); and Lilach Nir, Ph.D. (Gr ’05) among the Annenbergers published in the June 2012 issue of the Journal of Communication.

Jody Lyneé Madeira, Ph.D. (Gr ’07) has published the book Killing McVeigh (New York University Press, 2012).
