Guobin Yang to join Annenberg faculty

Guobin Yang, Ph.D., currently acting chair in the Department of Sociology at Barnard College at Columbia University, will join the faculty of Penn’s Annenberg School for Communication and the School of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Sociology. The associate professor appointment is effective July 1, 2012.

The 1950 MA thesis written by Elihu Katz, Ph.D., Distinguished Trustee Professor of Communication, has been reprinted in a special edition of The International Journal of Communication.

Klaus Krippendorff, Ph.D., the Gregory Bateson Professor of Communication, delivers lectures at universities in Sweden.

Diana C. Mutz, Ph.D., the Samuel A. Stouffer Professor of Communication and Political Science, along with George Gerbner Post-doctoral Fellows Susanna Dilliplane and Seth Goldman, publish in the American Journal of Political Science.

Research by Joseph Turow, Ph.D., the Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Communication, into digital marketing continues to generate interest.

Faculty and Annenberg in the news

Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Ph.D., the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication and Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, talks about the content and prevalence of the “horror story” style of political advertisements surrounding the subject of health care.  Prof. Jamieson also recently talked to the Columbus Dispatch about the practice of political “one minute” speeches in Congress.

Amy Jordan, Ph.D., director of the Media and the Developing Child Sector of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, discusses a study suggesting that television can boost the self-esteem of white boys.

Research by the Annenberg Public Policy Center indicates that many broadcast outlets do not fact check advertisements from super PACs, thereby letting egregious and incorrect information get on the airways.  This subject was discussed in-depth recently at the National Press Club in Washington (C-SPAN coverage here),and was covered in numerous news outlets, including The Philadelphia Inquirer.

APPC and Ohio State researchers help understand the influence of maternal sexual communication on adolescent risky sexual behaviors.

Doctoral candidates Susan Mello and Dina Shapiro talk about their research into how people arrive at health care related decisions during an interview with National Public Radio affiliate WHYY in Philadelphia.

Sara Mourad, Prof. Marwan M. Kraidy receive top paper award from ICA.

Alison Perelman receives Philadelphia City Council Research Fellowship.

Piotr M. Szpunar published in the International Journal of Communication and in the journal Social Semiotics.

Khadijah White contributes chapter to new book.
