Prof. Jamieson to inaugurate new lecture series at U. Iowa

Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Ph.D., the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication and Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, will be the inaugural speaker at the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s M. Holly McGranahan Lecture, April 4, 2012 at 7 p.m.

Annenberg’s Elihu Katz, Ph.D., Distinguished Trustee Professor of Communication, has published a piece in the journal Tablet: A New Read on Jewish Life titled “Home Away From Home: The Book of Esther, which chronicles the story of Purim, has special resonance for Jewish communities thriving in Diaspora.”  His co-author is Menahem Blondheim, head of the Communication Department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Diana Mutz, Ph.D., the Samuel A. Stouffer Professor of Communication and Political Science, will run a two-day seminar in Sweden this week during the Advances in Population-based survey experiments conference at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.  Prof. Mutz is the author of Population-Based Survey Experiments (Princeton University Press, 2011).

Joseph Turow, Ph.D., the Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Communication, talked about a time when online ad tracking had him somewhat “freaked out.” His comments came during a panel discussion at the Online Media, Marketing and Advertising meeting.

FlackCheck.org was prominently mentioned in an editorial in The News York Times that discussed how to manage advertising coming from the so-called “Super PACs.”

Adam Levin from the Center for Global Communication Studies recounts for The Pennsylvania Gazette his experiences on the ground in Afghanistan, participating in a media law strengthening program in that country.

Annenberg, Faculty in the news

Amy Jordan, Ph.D., Director of the Media and the Developing Child segment of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, wrote an opinion piece for The Philadelphia Inquirer about a local school district's use of a video posted on social media as the basis for its decision to discipline the students.

David Eisenhower, Director of the Institute for Public Service, was a guest on the WNYC program “The Brian Lerher Show” talking about the U.S. Constitution.

Today’s “Super Tuesday” presidential primaries, the ongoing 2012 campaign, and civility in public discourse are some topics that have been dominating the news, and Annenberg’s Kathleen Hall Jamieson is involved with much of the coverage.  Here is a selecting of recent news stories.

Student news

Kara Garrity and Matthew Lapierre were the featured speakers at a recent meeting of the group “Mothers and More,” a Delaware County, Pennsylvania, organization. The two discussed their children and media research initiatives, and answered questions about the impact of media and advertising on children.
