The Annenberg School for Communication is again the co-sponsor, with the Center for Africana Studies, of the annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture in Social Justice. This year’s lecture features John Legend (C ’99), Grammy Award-Winning Record Artist, Penn Alum, and Philanthropist. Prof. Kraidy talks about Al-Jazeera and Current TV Marwan M. Kraidy, Ph.D., Professor of Communication, talked about the recent acquisition of Current TV by Al-Jazeera in an interview with LeMonde. A partial translation: From the January 5 edition of LeMonde: Al-Jazeera pays a high price to boost its conquest of the United States Six years after the launch of its service in English, Al Jazeera has not yet managed to break [into] the United States. But the Qatari news channel is given a new chance of success: Wednesday, January 2, announced that it has acquired Current TV, a small antenna cable co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore, for $500 million (385 million euros). “Al Jazeera has been trying to find a loophole to succeed in the American market. It is a calculated economic as well as political [step]: a small country like Qatar has [few tools] to influence politics, but global media is one of them,” says University of Pennsylvania Professor Marwan Kraidy. Prof. Jamieson talks about the politics of the First Lady Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Ph.D., the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication and Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, talked to Yahoo! News about the style and political substance of First Lady Michelle Obama. New edition for Prof. Krippendorff’s book Congratulations to Klaus Krippendorff, Ph.D., the Gregory Bateson Professor of Communication. His book The Semantic Turn: A new foundation for design (CRC Press, 2005), has just been published in German. Prof. Katz speaking engagement at Hebrew University Elihu Katz, Ph.D., Distinguished Trustee Professor of Communication, and colleague Menahem Blondheim spoke on “Seeing Both Sides; Notes on the Presidential Debates of 2012,” at a symposium saluting Prof. Jacob Shamir upon his retirement from the Department of Communication at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Prof. Katz also served as chair and discussant at the retirement symposium of Prof. Tamar Liebes of the Hebrew University, which featured presentations by professors Sonia Livingstone (LSE), Peter Lunt (Leicester), Bruce Williams (University of Virginia), Andrea Press (University of Virginia), and John Durham Peters (University of Iowa). Prof. Mutz study into politics and dog ownership cited Research by Diana C. Mutz, Ph.D., the Samuel A. Stouffer Professor of Communication and Political Science, into the relation between political candidate preferences and dog ownership, was cited recently by Inside Higher Education. AAPSS bestows Moynihan Prize on William Julius Wilson William Julius Wilson of Harvard University has been named winner of the 2013 Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize from the American Academy of Political and Social Science, which is headquartered at the Annenberg Public Policy Center.
