About the talk:

Using audiovisual examples, Annenberg Prof. Joseph Turow will chart the history of the primetime medical-show formula from late 1930s movies through contemporary programs such as Gray's Anatomy, The Mindy Project, and Nurse Jackie.  The focus will be on the presentation of the medical system and its power structure across the decades, particularly in relation to physicians and other practitioners (especially nurses) as well as women and people of color. These are themes are in in my recent award-winning book Playing Doctor: Television, Storytelling and Medical Power.
