John L. Jackson, Jr. named Dean of Penn’s School of Social Policy & Practice

The announcement came today from Penn President Amy Gutmann and Provost Vincent Price.  His new position will become effective July 1.

New book by Professor Barbie Zelizer and alumna Keren Tenenboim-Weinblatt (Gr ’11) 

The edited volume, Journalism and Memory (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) is the result of work by advisor (Zelizer) and advisee (Tenenboim-Weinblatt).

Katz colloquium can be seen online

A video of the Elihu Katz Colloquium is now available via YouTube. Also, well-wishers for Professor Katz, who has moved to emeritus status, can still sign the online guest book.

Faculty news

Professor Joseph Cappella discussed the burning issue of e-cigarettes on a recent edition of the National Public Radio program “Radio Times with Marty Moss Coane.”

Professor Kathleen Hall Jamieson was interviewed by The Wall Street Journal for a story about President Obama’s choices to help promote health coverage under the Affordable Care Act. She also talked to The Huffington Post for a story about politics and gun control.

Professor Guobin Yang will be a discussant on a panel about religious cyber-activism in China at the meeting of the Association for Asian Studies March 27, and will deliver a keynote address, “The Historicity of Digital Activism” at a conference on Digital Activism #Now to be held at King’s College in London on April 4.

Professor Joseph Turow discusses his research into online data collection with the magazine Marketing News. Additionally, Prof. Turow was the invited speaker for a media-and-ethics lecture series at Loyola Marymount University. He charted changes in digital retailing and their implications for merchants, customers, and society at large. While at LMU, Prof. Turow also spoke to a class in digital media taught by Annenberg alum Chris Finlay (Gr ’11).
